History of Lake Hawea Hunting Safaris

Dave McDonald established Lake Hawea Hunting Safaris in 1993. Dave was a genuine kiwi hunter with a can do attitude whose time was tragically cut short at the age of 48 in May 2007.

As a free-range guide Dave's name is held very highly and as a New Zealand whitetail guide he was and is remembered as the best there has ever been. Dave spent a huge amount of time in the New Zealand backcountry, scouting, making fly camps and studying wild game to offer his clients the best New Zealand wilderness hunting experience possible.

Dave guided for whitetail, tahr and chamois and worked in with a friend for red stag hunting, he was also very skilled with his video camera. His DVD's 'Hunting bucks n bulls in New Zealand' and 'Bucks and bulls and Stags two' are testament to the man and guide he was.

My life changed in the spring of 2006. The phone rang, I will quote the words said as they will stick with me for the rest of my life. 'G'day its Dave McDonald here, I'm ######. I've got cancer. Do you want to buy my business.'

It has been an honour to take on Lake Hawea Hunting Safaris. To take over an existing hunting business with an outstanding name, meant that for me there were big boots to fill. 2012 is my sixth season running what I believe to be the best free-range hunting business in New Zealand.

We are still offering the wilderness hunts as Dave used to do, but over the past few years have spent a lot of time meeting and working with land owners, so that now we can also offer some outstanding free-range hunting on private properties.

"You are the maker of your own destiny." Dave McDonald

There are not too many people around who come to be running an outfitting business at a young age. Chris was twenty four when he took on and began to expand Lake Hawea Hunting Safaris.
